| Abstract | Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) Counterpulsation is a circulatory assist device which is designed for increasing the coronary perfusion and cardiac output in patients with acute left ventricular failure following cardiac surgery or in patients with cardiogenic shock following acute myocardial infarction. The article explains the mechanism of IABP in treating a patient with acute left ventricular failure following cardiac surgery. Nursing implications associated with this therapy are highlighted. |
