AbstractHeart block or atrioventricular block (AVB) is the delay or failure in conduction of atrial electrical impulses through the atrioventricular conducting system. Heart block can be classified as first degree, second degree and third degree AVB. First degree ABV is usually asymptomatic, but second and third degree AVB are usually accompanied with bradycardia and decreased cardiac output. Other than using pharmacological means, the most effective way to treat heart block in critical care areas is to institute temporary cardiac pacing. This case study describes the use of a temporary epicardial pacing in a patient who developed heart block after his open heart surgery.
