AbstractNurses are usually the first to respond to a cardiac arrest situation, but studies (Kaye and Mancini, 1986) show that there are often deficiencies in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills in nurses (as well as in doctors). This article focuses on discussing the updated information on one of the 3 phases of CPR, the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). The author has incorporated the Standards and Guidelines of CPR of the American Heart Association (and the Justice Institute of British Columbia) into this article to meet the local needs. The author believes that nurses may find this article useful and practical to help them handle cardiac arrest situations in hospital more confidently.
