AbstractChest X-Ray (CXR) is a radiological diagnostic test used commonly in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and many other areas for assessing patient's chest condition. Nurses can obtain useful information in a CXR film about patient's upper airway and chest; heart and mediastinum; upper gastrointestinal tract; bone and soft tissue; and the position of tubes and lines. An ability of the critical care nurses to interpret CXR in conjunction with patient's clinical signs ensure the early detection of medical emergencies and misplacement of tubes and lines. David Chan of the Prince of Wales Hospital outlines in the article the basic concept of CXR interpretation and gives examples to illustrate how the nurses can early detect problems in a CXR film.
