Abstract | Internet service in China, in terms of subscriber count, had a fast take-off in 1997. The article provides the reasons for the growth of the Internet market in China, and traces the development of ChinaNet, the brandname of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT)'s Internet service, and the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television (MRFT), aiming at becoming one of the leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in China. Also, the protracted problems which dent the growth of the Chinese Internet market are examined. |
