AbstractIn 1995 the international media indugled the theory that the People of Republic China had brought decisive pressure to bear on the outcome of the Taiwan elections. It is now clear that the "mainland factor" played a relatively minor role in the election's final result. Now, however, analysts worldwide, instead of placing this factor in its proper perspectives following the results of the March 1996 presidential election, attribute a surprisingly large impact to China's missile strategy, claiming that the mainland was hoist by its own petard and in reading of the outcome is tempting, but the evidence nevertheless forces the conclusion that the decisive factors in the election results are still to be found in Taiwan's domestic political situation.
