| Abstract | The People's Republic of China did its best to weigh heavily on the result of the Taiwanese general elections of 2 December 1995. In the weeks leading up to the poll, Peking made repeated verbal threats against the government in Taipei and rattled sabres off the shores of the Nationalist island in a clear bid to influence, indeed intimidate, voters on Taiwan. But were the Chinese Communists successful? Did they in fact significantly skew the result of the vote? |
