| Abstract | Rubella is a highly communicable though self limiting viral disease primarily affecting children. Its public health importance rests on its ability to induce abortions, stillbirths and congenital anomalies in the developing fetus. The Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) occurs in more than a quarter of infants born to mothers who acquired rubella during the first trimester of pregnancy. In Hong Kong, common features of CRS included heart defects (42.7%), hepatosplenomegaly (31.7%), cataract, glaucoma and hearing loss (24.4%), purpura/thrombocytopenia (18.3%) and microcephaly (14.6%). |
