AbstractWei Jingsheng, China's most well-known dissident, was released from jail on November 16th 1997 and immediately sent into exile in the United States (US). For the clarity with which he expressed his ideas -- on Peking's short-lived Democracy Wall in 1978-1979 -- and the resilience and determination he displayed at his two trials in 1994, Wei has become one of the most prominent figures in the Chinese democracy movement. The article interviews Wei Jingsheng on January 17th 1998 in Paris and offers readers a chance to hear this alternative voice which questions the many preconceptions, whether foreign or Chinese, about China. It also reports what Wei thinks about the idea that the Chinese people are of "poor quality" and the supposed consequences of this for democracy in China.
