| Abstract | This article introduces the book the Legacy of Tiananmen by James Miles and Ann Arbor. It has just been published by James Miles, the BBC correspondent from 1988 to 1994, not only steers clear of the pitfalls, too many anecdotes and too many generalizations, but even stands on its own as the "State of China" for the mid-90s, as a full-fledged reference book. This is made possible by the author's empathy for his subject, and by his knowledge of Chinese, which has enable him to use as primary sources not only members of the Party apparatus but also persecuted dissidents who have gone underground. |
