AbstractFrom 1949 to 1965 the Chinese medical world, heavily influenced by the Soviet model, completely rejected paychoanalysis. In a dictionary of philosophy translated from the Russian in 1955, "Freudianism and neo-Freudianism" was defined as "a reactionary and idealistic school of thought of the bourgeoisie, now in the service of imperialism". If textbooks mentioned Freud at all it was to disparage his work. In the period 1966-78 even psychology and psychiatry were considered suspect.
