AbstractThe United States (US) Department of Agriculture's estimate for 1997/98 US cotton production remains at 18.4m bales in its October report. The forecast for exports has been lowered by 300,000 bales to 6.9m bales for the 1997/98 crop year. This is probably due to a lower estimate for imports by China. The US supplied an average of 52.5% of China's imports over the last three years and, in 1996, 22.4% of US exports were destined for China.
