AbstractPatients with sexually transmitted diseases have characteristic factors causing psychosocial stress. Family physicians (FPs) should be able to identify such stress, which can have long term sequelae to the patients, their families and sexual partners. Other than sound knowledge in treating diseases and patience in educating and counselling the patients, a sensible judgment of when to and when not to refer is necessary. The article describes the stress and discusses how FPs can help them to cope with it.
