Article TitleA milestone of Psychology in Hong Kong : the past and the future : the development of Forensic Psychology in Hong Kong /

AbstractThe development of Forensic Psychology over the last two or three decades has made enormous strides, in so far as many psychologists can now identify themselves as Forensic Psychologists through their expertise in relation to the handling of juvenile and adult offenders, both in criminal, civil and tribunal type matters. Over the years, many innovative projects have thus been developed by psychologists, initiated locally and some with the help of "know-how" from abroad, adapted to local conditions. However, the question now remains as to how long it will take for psychology in Hong Kong -- as an Special Administrative Region (S.A.R.) region of China -- to develop one step further by recognising Forensic Psychology on a formal basis, through the Government registration of psychologists and by establishing university courses among other, in Forensic Psychology. This is also bearing in mind, that mainland China is currently expanding university-based training courses of various kinds in the therapeutic and rehabilitation fields, and that therefore the establishment of a Forensic Psychology Course could not only be of benefit to Hong Kong, but also eventually to China as a whole, now that the next millennium is in sight.
