AbstractThe development of psychological testing in Hong Kong is generally reviewed in terms of attainment, intelligence, and personality test construction and application since 1960. The use of vocational and other tests for selection and placement in educational, clinical, industrial, forensic, and academic settings is also briefly described. However, the growing awareness of the professional and ethical issues of psychological testing is specifically noted and discussed, and the future direction and the new mission of psychological testing are clearly delineated in view of the cultural identity of the Hong Kong Chinese (over 99% of the population) particularly after July 1, 1997, when Hong Kong becomes part of China, The paper particularly calls for the need to establish a Testing Bureau in Hong Kong to oversee the construction and validation of indigenous psychological tests to suit the rather unique Chinese culture in Hong Kong and to ensure the proper usage of these tests in the interest of both the psychologists and the general public. It is considered that it is now time to have such an action after almost 40 years of using psychological tests in assessments.
