Abstract | Educational psychology as a distinct profession did not exist until 1981 when the only training programme was established in the Department of Psychology of the University of Hong Kong. In the last decade as the number of educational psychologists has increased, their role and function has also evolved from a focus on direct assessment and intervention to an indirect services and system level interventions with a variety of clients. Many problems and challenges, however, still exist, the most important of which is a severe shortage of educational psychologists mainly as a result of Government employment policies and a high rate of brain drain. Steps however, are recently being taken by the Government to rectify this problem. Given their rigorous training, educational psychologists have much to offer the Hong Kong Community if these employment hurdles are removed. |
