AbstractThe paper studies the Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection rate in one hundred and forty consecutive symptomatic Hong Kong Chinese undergoing outpatient gastroscopy in the Department of Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital from October, 1996 to January 1997. The results show that the overall HP infection rate was 51%. HP is common in local Chinese duodenal ulcer patients and empirical antibiotic therapy may be indicated in proven duodenal ulcer patients in a family medicine setting even when HP testing is not available.
