Abstract | The objective is to determine whether difference in Helicobacter pylori prevalence exists between bleeding and non-bleeding duodenal ulcers. It is a retrospective case-notes review by Departments of Surgery and Medicine, United Christian Hospital, Hong Kong. Among 192 adult patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcers from a 4-month period in 1995. As a result, one hundred and ninety two patients with duodenal ulcer were evaluated. Ninety-nine patients had bleeding ulcers, and 78% of them had a positive CLO test, whereas of the 93 patients who had non-bleeding ulcers, 90% had a positive CLO test. The difference was statistically significant (p<0.02). Therefore, differential Helicobacter pylori prevalence exists but its significance is unclear. Futher studies are needed for clarification. |
