AbstractChina will delay for a month, as it announced on 8 December 1996, a ban on imports of some United States textiles, farm goods and alcoholic drinks, in retaliation for US$19 million in penalties imposed by Washington in September 1996 on some imports of textile goods from China. Washington claimed that China was shipping through third countries to avoid quota restrictions. Four days of talks were held without result in Beijing in early December 1996, but were to resume in the United States on 19 December of the same year, though Washington said that the penalties imposed on the imports from China would not be revoked.
