Abstract | Western Maoism reached its height at the end of the 1960s, and throughout the 1970s all sorts of people from the left and right were welcomed to enjoy its hospitality, without prior reservations. The history of these disparate fascinations remains to be written. But there is no doubt that one of the intellectual mainsprings was the interview granted to Malraux by Mao Zedong on 3 August 1965. There are three versions of this interview. The Chinese and French transcripts are strikingly similar. The Chinese text is more trustworthy with regard to Mao's words, which are so orthodox that they seem to have been gathered with religious zeal, whereas for Malraux's statements the French text seems largely preferable, but with one or two provisos. This article is the interview transcript with Mao by Malraux. |
