| Abstract | The Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications of China has been carrying on with intensive effort a program of construction of optical cable trunk lines during the period of the 8th Five-Year Plan, and has brought the facilities for long-distance communication to a new level at a yearly growth rate of 40-50 percent. The progress in the enhancement of facilities in quantity, quality and technological level is all unprecedented in the history of telecommunications in China. It is expected that by the turn of the 20th century, China will have a national network of advanced level and sufficient capacity to meet the requirements of the different sectors of society; and the further construction of long-distance transmission networks with optical cables will enter a new, higher stage which will be of significance as explained in this article. |
