AbstractThis article aims at trying to explore to what extent general practitioners in Hong Kong are practising the concepts and principles of family medicine. By understanding what difficulties exist people can then modify their undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in family medicine. They can also review the delivery of their primary health care system in Hong Kong especially in the private sector. In conclusion, to overcome obstacles for the practice of family medicine in Hong Kong, the public, the profession and the government all have roles to play. Active involvement in continuing medical education, membership of the Hong Kong College of General Practitioners (HKCGP), postgraduate family medicine training opportunities and emphasis on a community-based approach will help to establish family medicine as a specialty.
