AbstractWhen the Hungarian Socialist Party won its sweeping electoral victory on May 8, it marked the fourth country in Eastern Europe - after Poland, Lithuania and the Slovak Republic (not counting Ukraine) - where parties generally described as being made up of ex-communists were put at the helm of the state. These countries appear to be taking their cue from China's reform policies. Beijing chose to build on what it had, instead of doing away with the old system completely.
