AbstractDespite the efforts of the ruling power to impose nationalism via its think tanks, the Chinese intellectual scene has been very unreceptive. Ample proof of this was the criticism voiced by many of the participants at the Zhanlue yu guanli seminar on the topic. Discussion has been relatively unfettered, with both supporters and opponents giving their views freely, the latter legitimizing their their own by reference to Marxist internationalism. The freedom being enjoyed is itself a telling indication of the authorities' inability to make up their minds on the approach to take to this new ideology. This, however, is not the case with the "Four Basic Principles" - ever since their creation, and especially since 1989, Chinese publications have been strictly forbidden from questioning their validity.
