Abstract | The "International Conference on the Flow of Rural Labour in China" held in Peking, from 25 to 27 June 1996, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture's Research Center for Rural Economy (RCRE), with the support of the Ford Foundation has raised the problems facing Chinese agriculture. Specialists from the Center, sociologists and civil servants, presented the results of surveys undertaken in various villages, that were all sources of emigration.Huang Ping, a sociologist with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, has studied eight villages where land is scarce, seeking to isolate migrant motivations. His research indicates that people leave their village in order to enable their families to survive, rather than to make money. |
