AbstractMost observers of China agree to the fact that the 1980s have seen a relaxation of the party's grip on the economy. Fewer note that concurrently, the Party-state has loosened its control on society, but this is an important development in China's political life. In this article, we shall concentrate on this aspect of the evolution of the People's Republic. The term "autonomisation of society" describes the process through which society slowly disentangles itself from the grip of the Part-State. This process is undeniably one of the main features of the evolution of Chinese society since the death of Mao Zedong in 1976.
