AbstractIt goes without saying that all walks of life are affected by the phenomenon of emigration. On the contrary, one cannot help but notice the vital importance which is attached to the possession of a foreign passport when a person in this category is one of those who are not enthusiastic about the prospect of 1997. This also applies, in fact, to the numerous people who, as the deadline approaches, have felt a sudden surge of patriotism which, in most cases, seems too late-coming and too ostentatious to be irreproachably sincere. The least one can say about Hong Kong style patriotism is that it varies according to the climate. Providing with examples, the author examines the issue in the article.
