| Abstract | The article provides a book review of "A l'ombre de Hong Kong-Le Delta de la Riviere des perles" by Thierry Sanjuan. This work falls within a geographical and economic perspective, and is a useful addition to recent monographs on a number of Chinese regions, including Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze Delta. Sanjuan's objective is to identify a territory and, especially, to study the process of regional construction on the scale of the Pearl River Delta. He is also concerned to analyse the evolving nature of relations with central government, in the context of the region lacking any historical unity. Two contrasting pictures of the delta are thus presented twelve years apart, in 1980 and 1992. |
