| Abstract | President Lee Tung-hui's trip to Latin America in September 1997 has fanned the flames of Peking's anger towards its "renegade province". And the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Chang (Chang Hsiao-yen), launched a diplomatic marathon in 1997 with a view to strengthening relations between Taiwan and its allies by practising "dollar diplomacy". The article looks at the impact of developments in Peking's foreign policy on Taiwan's. It also examines Taiwan's diplomatic counter-attack and the hopes that it raises in the country. Besides, it discusses the issues about this foreign policy and the resistance it has encountered in Taiwan. |
