| Abstract | There is no more sensitive issue, as we approach June 30, 1997, than the replacement of the British garrison with the PLA garrison. There is predictably a sense of fear of the unknown. Images from Tiananmen Square in 1989 still colour the perceptions of many, even though thoughful people realise that the attitude of China's leaders to reforms, be they political or economic, has undergone a sea-change in the intervening years. |
