| Abstract | Hong Kong's Legislative Council (Legco) wound up its four-year term with a marathon three-day sitting that ended in the early hours of July 29. Elections next month will produce a new crop of legislators, but their projected four-year term will almost certainly be aborted. Because Governor Chris Patten broadened Hong Kong's electoral franchise in spite of China's objections, Beijing has vowed to dismantle the new legislature after it repossesses the territory in 1997. |
