Abstract | Most private sector forecasters, as well as the Government, were far too conservative in their 1999 forecasts, proving once again that economists have real trouble picking economic turning points. They got the trend right, says Ian Perkin, Chief Economist at the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, but underestimated both deflation and the real momentum the economy would build up during the year. |
