Abstract | While Hong Kong has become an international financial centre as well as an important telecommunications and transportation hub, Shenzhen has made a 'miraculous' transformation from a small rural town to a leading city of mainland China. Its per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and average salary surpass those of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. Shenzhen is no longer simply a hinterland supporting Hong Kong's economic development but is also a growing city in its own right. The relationship between Hong Kong and Shenzhen has taken on new dimensions. Economic ties between Shenzhen and Hong Kong are not only inevitable but mutually beneficial. Strategies promoting cooperation and growth of both as twin cities should be encouraged. |
