Article TitleHong Kong : the road to becoming a world city.
Is Part OfHang Seng economic monthly ; Nov/Dec 1999, p.1-3, illus.
AbstractThe evolution and growth of a city from industrial to services-oriented require support from an expanding hinterland. Mainland China, in particular with the abundant supply of land and labour in South China, has played such a supporting role in the various stages of Hong Kong's rise to a metropolitan city. Specialisation and increasing division of tasks between Hong Kong and the cities and towns in the Pearl River Delta region can enhance the competitiveness of the whole region while further develping Hong Kong as a world city. In the information era, Hong Kong has to stay at the forefront of technological advances and invest in a state-of-the-art information infrastructure. A reasonable immigration policy enabling Kong Kong to attract and retain the very best people is also required.
