AbstractA survey of the prevalence of dementia among elderly was conducted in three different areas of Shanghai, the People's Republic of China. The DSM-III-R was used as diagnostic criteria. The prevalence of dementia in the whole sample was 4.21 percent: Alzheimer's disease (3.15 percent) and vascular dementia (0.85 percent). The prevalence increased with age: 1.78 percent among those aged 60-64, 3.92 percent among 70-74, 12.45 percent among 80 years and older. The prevalence was higher in women and in urban residents. The potential risk factors of dementia were formulated and discussed.
