AbstractThe Hong Kong Supernet was an applied research and development project started by faculty and staff of the Department of Computer Science and sponsored by the Sino Software Research Centre of the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) in 1993. It later became a project of the HKUST RandD Corporation and began public service in October 1993. As the first licensed Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Hong Kong, Supernet generated a lot of interest in the community and with that a lot of competition. When Supernet was sold by the University in June 1996, it was considered the "best" among the more than 70 ISP's in Hong Kong. The article is a record of Supernet from its inception to final sale. Factors leading to the success may be of interest to people who are planning or conducting other applied research projects.
