AbstractIt has been shown that hepatitis B infection (HBV) infection is one of the causes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Since the discovery in 1989 of the hepatitis C virus (HCV), researchers have paid close attention to the relationship between HCV and HCC. But there are few study reports of the relationships between HBV, HCV and HCC in rural areas of China. The aim of the article is to investigate the relative roles of HBV and HCV infections in rural patients with HCC. The study indicates the presence of HCV and/or HBsAg serologic markers was significantly associated with HCC risk, the OR of HCC was 6.8 for anti-HCV positive in the absence of HBsAg, and a high risk (8.0) was observed when both markers were present. Condition logistic regression analysis showed that HBV and HCV infections, drinking history and past history of liver disease were main risk factors associated with HCC development.
