AbstractHong Kong was the number one global clothing exporter by value in 1973-85, except in 1978-79 when it was overtaken by Italy. Domestic clothing exports grew immensely in the 1970s and 1980s, but from the 1990s they flattened out, with some decline in 1993 and a slight recovery in 1994. K.F. Au and K.W. Yeung, of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, analyse in the article the challenge to Hong Kong's clothing industry.
