Abstract | Hong Kong's total exports of jewellery suffered a marginal decline of 1% to HK$10.5 billion in 1997. The Asian currency crisis is expected to create only a limited impact on Hong Kong exports. In addition to Thailand, which is a major competitor to Hong Kong, competition in low to medium-priced products from the Chinese Mainland and India is strong. The overall prospects of Hong Kong's jewellery exports are not particularly encouraging in 1998, overshadowed by the Asian financial crisis and dwindling demand from Southeast Asia. |
