Abstract108 pairs of adult Chinese femora, that had no defect or disease such as osteoarthritis, were submitted to computed tomography (CT) osteometric study. The shape of the medullary canal in the proximal femur was assessed using the canal flare index. Male femora had a higher index compared with female femora (p<0.001). Ageing was associated with a decrease in the index (r=0.26, p<0.001). The overall canal flare index in Chinese was higher than the reported indices determined by plain radiography or CT in Caucasians which ranged from 3.36 to 4.32. These results indicate the need for appropriate considerations when designing press-fit femoral prostheses for Asians.
