| Abstract | Since the overthrow of the Gang of Four and even more so since July 1977, when Deng Xiaoping returned to power, China has been pushing ahead with a process of reform which, after twenty-odd years, has brought about profound and far-reaching changes in its political regime. The article suggests some hypothesses on the nature of the relationship between the Chinese state and the vast population over which it rules on the basic of the data emerging from surveys carried out by both Chinese and foreign researchers. |
