| Abstract | Psychological health is an integral part of well-being of the elderly. Using the life span approach and the construct of control, successful aging can be seen as the development and maintenance of control throughout life. Besides distinguishing between normal and abnormal aging, psychologists have the responsibility to work together with other professionals to encourage the development of the potential of the aging person, thereby promoting greater life satisfaction and a stronger sense of self-efficacy amongst older adults and their carers. Furthermore, the provision of comprehensive psychological care can contribute to the better adjustment of older adults to stressful life events associated with aging. |
