AbstractThe objective of the article is to study the choice of post-vaccination serological test by vaccinees and the seroconversion rate after a complete course of hepatitis B vaccine. A prospective study of vaccine recipients aged 11 years or above who were given the option to check the anti-hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) level one to two months after the full course of three-dose hepatitis B vaccination at zero, one, six months interval, at their own expense. Laboratory forms were given at the third injection to those who opted to have the test. A total of 212 patients aged 11 years or above receiving hepatitis B vaccines from 1st June 1994 to 31st May 1995 in a private hospital in Hong Kong. The results show that the response rate to have post-vaccination test in the study was 87.3%; 185 subjects had their anti-HBs level checked one to two months after the vaccination. The seroconversion rate was 96.8%. It is concluded that high probability of seroconversion should be discussed with the vaccinee. Post-vaccination serology is recommended only in selected groups of persons.
