AbstractIndependent films were banned in China in 1996. And a batch of regulations introduced in 1997 as part of a spiritual clean-up of the arts hit even China's official film-makers with a slew of prohibitions. But film-makers are trying to work within the system to improve things as best they can. The article features two films in China, Feng Xiaoning's 'Red River Valley' and Tian Zhuang-zhuang's 'How Steel Is Made', and the changes in policy in order to make it easier for the studios to do business.
