Abstract | The outbreak of H5N1 'Bird Flu' virus in 1998 caused public panic and eventually led to the Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government's decision to kill all the chickens in Hong Kong's markets and farms. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) (SPCA) had expected the H5N1 scare to lead to the surrender of pet birds. They were not however, prepared for the panic abandonment of small pets such as rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas and even terrapins. |
