| Abstract | On 28 December, 1997, the Hong Kong government issued a death sentence on every chicken in the city. The radical measure was a desperate attempt to contain H5N1, the flu virus that had suddenly leapt from fowl to people. The article reviews the process of the mass cull, the tests conducted by a team of virologists in a laboratory at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on a range of birds and animals to determine what was the host organism of H5N1. Issues raised in the process are discussed. |
