| Abstract | From Kuala Lumpur to Kaohsiung, from Beijing to Bangkok, city dwellers are paying with their health for the region's swift economic growth. Over the two decades prior to 1997, the standard of living of hundreds of millions of people has risen beyond measure. But for many of them the poor state of the environment has meant a sharp decline in the quality of life. Against a backdrop of growing concern about the environment, 40 most livable urban centers in Asia are ranked in the article. Hong Kong and Taipei are on the top ten of the list. |
