AbstractFrom 1987 to 1997, the growth rate in China has broken records, but the statistics do not take into account the very diverse situations encountered across the country as a whole. Heilongjiang, Liaoning and Jilin, which make up the Northeast, one of the oldest industrial centres in China, are encountering many difficulties in finding their way towards a market economy. In the process, it is the workers in the state-owned companies who are paying the price of this transition. And the price is so high that some Chinese researchers readily refer to "the new urban poverty".
