Abstract | Deng Xiaoping has gone, and now Peng Zhen, the former mayor of Peking and the first victim of the Cultural Revolution, has joined him. Yet the position of the present leadership team is not as secure as it might appear. It did indeed manage to prevent any threats to public order in the aftermath of Deng's death but only by dint of a security clampdown across the capital to prevent citizens from paying their last respects to the "Great Architect" in sensitive areas of the city. Little Deng's attendance at Peng's funeral did seem to suggest that the "left" was somewhat more in favour. |
