Abstract | The development of Hong Kong pupils' reading skills and strategies in English will to a great extent be in proportion to their desire to read in that language, for as one learns a language by using it, one learns to read the language by reading it. However, the desire to read is not taught, it is caught, and this article has mainly argued that one very successful way it is caught is through the experience of shared-reading using a big book. A suggested classroom procedure and follow-up activities are also provided. |
